Ska

Ska is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, Its origins comes from Reggae. Ska combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American Jazz and rhythm and blues. Music historians typically divide the history of ska into three periods: the original Jamaican ska scene of the 1960s, the 2-tone ska revival that started in England in the late 1970s, and the third-wave ska movement, which started in the 1980s.

The origins of the word ska is believe to come from the sound the guitar makes when playing ska chords which sounds like "Skat, Skat, Skat". The music style often sounds happy and upbeat. Drums are played in a 4/4 time sequence. The guitar and drums are played off-beat to create a really unique sound. The dance style associated with ska is called "Skanking".

Skanking originated in Jamacian Dance Halls, The punk version features a sharp striking out look with the arms, and is sometimes used in moshing to knock around others doing the same.

2-Tone Ska arrived in Britain in the 1970's, bands like "The Specials" and "The Madness" raised interest in Ska and raise awareness to racial unity. The ska symbol was developed during this period which is a black and white checkerboard design.

Famous Ska Bands Include "Less Than Jake", "Rell Big Fish" and "Catch 22"

Punk Rock!!!

Punk is a rock genre that developed between 1974 and 1976 in the United States, the UK and Australia. Punk embraces a DIY ethic, with many bands self-producing their recordings and distributing them through informal channels. In America an influential band was "The Ramones" from New York, In the U.K. "The Sex Pistols" became a huge success because of they're famous CD "Never Mind the Bollocks" which included songs such as "God Save the Queen" and "Anarchy in the U.K".

In later years punk began to spread out into Sub-Genres such as Hardcore Punk, Skate Punk, Pop Punk, Ska Punk and Celtic Punk, Most of these developed in The U.S. When Punk Bands began to sign to Major Record Labels many bands disagreed stating that Punk was suppose to be independent an not enter mainstream in America, the most well know band to refuse to sign to a major label in NoFX who's lead singer, Fat Mike, started him own independent label "Fat Wreck Chords".

After "The Sex Pistols" came "The Clash" who again increased interest in punk in England which brought logos like this: (look Right).

A few years later punk went into decline and with the death of Sid Vicious (Bassist of the Sex Pistols)
